To all of our friends, neighbors and community members,
Recently two of our neighborhood center staff were called racial slurs while walking down a street in Madison. The use of racial slurs to demean and disempower people violates their rights. Not only that but it also threatens our sense of safety and security. As neighborhood centers, we ask that our program participants take pride in their community and feel a responsibility toward improving it. This unfortunate event reinforces that not everyone feels this sense of connection and inclusivity. It brings to light the importance of talking about race in a way that empowers and educates. We ask all of our community members to join us in thoughtful reflections about the way that we treat others. We call on Madison citizens to treat each other with respect. We hope that this message helps to inspire honest and thoughtful dialogue about how to create a better Madison, where all citizens are empowered and included. K-5 Program
