Daily Activities

Wisconsin Youth Company 4K wrap teachers will create weekly lesson plans tiered to the children’s interest. Our 4K wrap program helps your child to discover new opportunities through our choice-based curriculum. Within daily activities, children will have a chance to participate in STEM, art projects, community building games, and other various hands-on activities to expand their developmental growth. Along with developing important life skills such as language, social, and emotional skills.

There will be time for daily outdoor play (weather permitted) where children will participate in group games and explore the playground.

Lunch

Hot lunch is available through the school. Please work with Cushing to set up this option.

If not receiving hot lunch, Parents must send a sack lunch that must not require refrigeration or microwaving. Some children have life-threatening allergies (like a peanut or tree nut allergy). For this reason, Wisconsin Youth Company requests that children bring a nut-free lunch.

Snack

  • A morning and afternoon snack will be provided, along with milk
  • All snacks served at program are nut-free
  • All children must wash hands with soap and water before and after eating
  • Please see the Wisconsin Youth Company Program Handbook for more details about snack

Rest Time

  • Each day, there will be a 30-minute rest time for children. Wisconsin Youth Company will provide a padded mat and sheet for your child to lay on.
  • Under DCF state licensing, children are required to have a blanket at nap time. Please send a blanket with your child. You may also send a small pillow or stuffed animal. All items will be kept in a tote at program.
  • During rest time, the lights will be turned off and quiet music will be played. Children that do not choose to sleep may be given permission to play with small manipulatives near their mat.
  • At the end of each week, children’s items and rest sheet will be sent home to be washed and returned to program. It is important that Parents send the items back with their child on the following Monday.

We had lots of fun in February. We talked about our emotions and ways to help regulate them. Ms. Lorna, Ms. Stacey, and Ms. Sam came in to read to us and do a fun activity. We talked about love and what it means to each of us. We also had a Lego and cars week. We used our creativity to build towers and different animals with Legos. A couple of letters we talked about and practice writing were L and V.

In March, we will learn the letters D, S, P, and M. Read Across America is in the beginning of March so we will have a Dr. Seuss week and read our favorite books. Feel free to bring in your child’s favorite book from home so we can share it with the class. We will also prepare for spring by planting seeds (grass, sunflowers, and beans) and learn how plants grow.

– Ms. Ellyn

Hello Cushing families,

February flew by just as fast as Cupid’s arrow. The most memorable February activities included paper airplane contest down the hallway, making strawberry-scented play dough, Valentine’s volcanoes, string art, learning to plastic canvas cross stitch, and learning pony bead lacing. Incoherent Family was a un game the older kids enjoyed. In this game, you must try to figure out a word or phrase, with gibberish wording they give you to guess from. Here is an example: Press hid dent chill hell heck shin (find the answer at the end of the newsletter).

The kids were excited to see previous Wisconsin Youth Company stop by for a visit. Ms. Lorna and Ms. Lisa both made an appearance at Before School in February. Thel kids got the joy of meeting a Mrs. Samm from a neighboring program at Merton and Mrs. Kali from Summit View. The children seem to really enjoy meeting new staff and visits from previous ones. As always, we also had visits from Ms. Jen, Ms. Sam, and Ms. Stacey.

As we get into March, we are hoping to make more memories with some of the activities we have planned: our yearly tradition of making green eggs and ham, mint-scented play dough, shamrock punch, and Leprechaun Oreo McFlurries.

As you all know, Wisconsin can be temper-mental with the weather. As the snow sticks around, please remember that everyone needs snowpants, boots, winter coat, hats, and gloves/mittens to go outside and play in the snow. I know the school does not make children in grades 4 and 5 wear snowpants in the snow, however After School requires all to have snowpants.

Project: Valentine’s Day Playdough

Materials needed

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar (optional but recommended)
  • 1 cup water (approximately)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Red or pink food coloring
  • Optional: A few drops of a pleasant scent (e.g., vanilla, rose, or strawberry extract)
  • Optional: heart-shaped cookie cutters or Valentine-themed molds
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula

Steps

  • Combine dry ingredients. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and cream of tartar (if using).
  • Tint the water. In a separate small cup, mix the food coloring (pink or red) into the water. Add a few drops of your chosen scent if desired.
  • Mix in wet ingredients. Pour the tinted, scented water and vegetable oil into the dry ingredients. Stir until it begins to form dough.
  • Knead the dough. Turn the dough out onto a clean surface and knead it with your hands. If the dough feels too sticky, add a bit more flour; if it’s too dry, add a few drops of water.
  • Shape and play. Roll out the dough and use heart-shaped cookie cutters or Valentine-themed molds to create festive shapes. Store the dough in an airtight container when finished to keep it soft.
