November Recap:

It was a pleasure to meet so many families during our fall gathering. It was a blast and an honor to meet so many family members. As we wrap up another wonderful month together, it’s hard to believe how quickly fall has flown by and now welcome the excitement of the winter season.

During November, we talked about Native American History Month. We watched audiobooks about Native American history and culture. We made our own classroom talking stick and dream catcher.

We also practiced gratitude and made thankful leaves to decorate our door. We learned Thanksgiving traditions and foods and enjoyed a Thanksgiving themed treat.

During the month, our class is learning the difference between tattling and telling. We are learning to tell an adult when someone is hurt, unsafe, sick, or in danger. We know our voices are powerful and that we can express ourselves directly to our peers when the situation is safe.

Many students come to tell me when they don’t know what to do and this is great because it shows there’s a concern they want help with. The first step is to learn what the situation/problem is. Then we can learn how to take the next steps to solve the problem.

In class, we practiced role-playing different scenarios and asked ourselves, “Is this tattling or telling?” An example of “tattling” can be when another student takes a crayon away from someone using it. Before telling, we can use our words and ask for the crayon back saying, “I’m using the crayon right now. Can I please have it back?” If the child doesn’t respond, starts yelling/grabbing the crayon, or someone becomes unsafe then they should tell a teacher.

An example of telling can be when a student starts climbing on the table. Someone could get hurt and this helps keep the children safe by telling the teacher. Another option to help them think consciously is to ask, “Is that a problem you can solve, or do you need a grown-up’s help?” These reminders help children build independence, confidence, and problem-solving skills.

November Recap:

The holiday season is in full swing, and the children, along with myself are getting hyped for everything this festive season has to offer. Before we get into our December happenings, let’s take a moment to remember all the fun we had in November.

November brought a lot of fall-themed activities, along with activities focused on being grateful and thankful.

In Before School some of the most liked activities included pinecone bird feeders with sun butter, felt pillows, and fall-themed sensory bottles. We offer a weekly coloring/drawing contest, and we have weekly riddles to solve. Here are a few from last month:

  • Why do birds fly south in the winter?
  • What’s a scarecrow’s favorite fruit?
  • What sound does a turkey’s phone make?

Answers:

  • Because it’s too far to walk.
  • STRAW-berries
  • Wing-Wing

In After School, the kids had a blast making pinecone hedgehogs, craft stick acorns, and Ms. Stacey even held one of her famous storytimes! Larry, her trusty puppet, is always a huge hit!

December Happenings:

For December, we will focus on the holidays and all the different ones that are celebrated this time of year, along with family traditions. If you celebrate a different holiday besides Christmas, we would love to hear from you! And no matter what holiday you celebrate, we would love to know what family traditions you have. You can send these via text or email to sball@wisconsinyouthcompany.org.

We will also accept donations for the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County. If you want love to help a great cause, we have included a link to their wish list. We will accept donations through Friday, December 19. We will have a donation bin placed by the sign-in table.

Along with focusing on different holidays and traditions, we will also make parent and teacher gifts!

Looking ahead in Before School: We will continue weekly riddles. Riddles include kids’ choice and these winter-themed riddles.

  • Why is Santa good at karate?
  • What kind of photos do elves take?
