Get to Know Staff:

Happy 2026! I hope everyone’s year is off to a great start! I wanted to thank all the families who gave me a gift for the holidays. Everything was appreciated.

January Recap:

In January, the kids learned about the letters K, L, M, and N. We did fun projects such as making letter Ks in ketchup, building Lego houses, playing with musical instruments, and making noodle necklaces.

February Happenings:

In February, we will continue to learn the letters O, P, and Q, while also sneaking in a week to learn about Valentine’s Day.

Family Engagement:

We will have a small Valentine’s Day party Friday, February 13. We won’t exchange Valentine’s but rather have a healthy snack and play games. It will be a fun morning!

Get to Know Staff:

My husband and I write music together. My husband is a producer and we both sing and play instruments. Even my daughter loves to sing and gave us some very enthusiastic Frozen karaoke over winter break!

January Recap:

In January, our class had a space theme from an overwhelming request from children. They all had tons of fun with this unit. Some of our favorite activities included space slime, replicating planets to make a solar system, eating like an astronaut, and creating fizzy moon rocks. We also practiced our letters K-M. We filled out our kindness chart — “Our kindness is out of this world” — over the course of the month by adding stars to our sky when showing exemplary kindness.

February Happenings:

This month, we will lean into February’s holiday themes such as love, friendship, and appreciating our differences. We are excited about our dentist’s office, which is new to our dramatic play center. We have also added a special writing center to our room. We will work on letters N-Q. Here’s to another great month!

Family Engagement: Student Spotlight

Cambria: Cambria’s favorite class activity is art, and her favorite game is duck duck goose. Cambria loves having dance parties with her classmates. Especially when her favorite song “Takedown” comes on.

Levi: Levi’s favorite color is red and always incorporates it into his art, which is his favorite school activity. Over winter break Levi loved going to Skateland and the movie theater with his family.

Get to Know Staff:

Hello everyone! My name is Lorna Welchman. I have been with Wisconsin Youth Company for four years. Before that, I worked with kids on the autism spectrum implementing behavior play-based therapy for eight years. I went to school for education and got my degree in special education in 2017. I absolutely love my job and working with kids. In my particular role at Wisconsin Youth Company, I travel between all our sites and programs to support our staff and children, support behavior management, help make sure licensing guidelines are being followed, and build relationships with the children.

January Recap:

January was a great month back from winter break and starting the new year off with learning new group games like statues and variations of duck duck goose like “kanga kanga roo,” while also incorporating letters of the alphabet into our learning each week.

February Happenings:

This month, we will continue to learn our “letter of the week” while incorporating fun themes. We also will explore more into the world of sensory and science. The kids have been loving science experiments like slime and lava volcanoes. I’m excited to continue broadening their experiences and learning with more activities like those to come! We plan to have a Valentines-themed week where the kids will have a lot of fun and make yummy food projects. I am also excited to continue building my relationships with your kids and keep the fun and learning going!

Family Engagement:

Joke of the month: What did the ghost say to its valentine?

Anwer: You look so BOOtiful.

Get to Know Staff:

Ms. Samm’s favorite thing about this month is all the fun things that come with Valentine’s Day — fun parties, card exchanges, and everyone being excited for another holiday to share with friends.

December & January Recap:

December and January flew by! We had fun with winter crafts, fun food Fridays, and discussing family traditions.

In January, we also started our “student teacher Fridays” with children in grades 3-5 before school. This incentive was created to help strengthen responsibility and respect. Each Monday a student is picked to be the teacher on Friday; they will then have input on our crafts, food project, and group game for that day, as well as sitting in the teacher’s chair. They have had so much fun being the teacher for a day and having their creativity shine.

February Happenings:

This month we will celebrate Valentine’s Day with yummy snacks, art projects, and a dance party. We will have a small party Thursday, February 12. We are also hoping to spend more time outside so please make sure your child is dressed for the weather!

Our Before and After School programs are switching to digital attendances. With this will come some adjustment to the signing in and out process. Starting Monday, February 2, you will sign your child in and out on an iPad which will be located at a table outside of the 3rd-5th grade classroom. This iPad will be used for all classes instead of the binders found in the classrooms. Please reference the email sent January 28 from our registration team.

Family Engagement:

Congratulations to our goose food winners for January. They have done a fabulous job ensuring Behonkce is well taken care of and loved. Great job showing stellar responsibility, respect, and kindness!
