The month of February was a snowy one! The students enjoyed building snow forts, playing in sensory bins, and learning new games. A favorite activity for many was the fake snow sensory bin. To make your own, simply combine a container of cornstarch with a cup of conditioner. Any brand will work; I picked mine up from the Dollar Store. Add more conditioner as needed to get the perfect texture, then add tools and toys such as ice cream scoops, measuring spoons, and winter animal figurines. They had tons of fun, and with a tablecloth, the mess was contained!

We also practiced problem-solving skills such as taking others’ perspectives to ask questions and talk through problems, as well as using assertive language, tone of voice, and posture to share thoughts and feelings. To continue practicing, we have started multi-age After School groups! We have the dinosaurs, dragons, robots, and unicorns — all with their very own mascot!

To celebrate our progress so far, students put together a lemonade stand. They juiced lemons, mixed in sugar and water, and played cashiers and servers to enjoy the treat of our homemade lemonade!

Questions to ask your child:

  •  Are you in the dinosaur, dragon, robot, or unicorn group?
  • How do you play head, shoulders, knees, cone?
  • How did you help with the lemonade stand?
  • If you wanted to use a toy another kid is using, how could you talk to them about it?
