We are anticipating a wonderful program year at After School Stephens and look forward to serving your family.

Hello Stephens families,

Happy December! We had an eventful November with building projects, food projects, and more. Some of the favorite active games were dodge ball, soccer, and learning to play gaga ball. We also experimented with building the tallest tower possible and seeing if we could fit through a piece of paper. Some of our most popular projects were our food projects this month. We made our own butter and mini pizzas. It was a fun month of experimenting and learning new things.

We are looking forward to our first marble jar party that will happen sometime this month. As a group we have been working on earning marbles for the marble jar by doing kind things for others and recognizing those things during circle time. Once we reach 100 marbles, the children earn a celebration of their choice. In the past, we have had movie days and dance parties. I am looking forward to seeing what we decide to do once we have earned those last few marbles.

One of the projects that the kiddos really liked last month was making our own butter. It’s a rather easy and fun experiment to try at home if you are interested.

What you need:

  • Heavy cream
  • Salt
  • A jar with a tight-fitting lid (like a mason jar)
  • Marbles (optional)

To make your own butter start by filling your jar about half way with heavy cream and add salt to taste. Then put the lid on and shake. It takes about 10-15 minutes of shaking to turn the heavy cream into butter. To speed up the process you can also add marbles to the jar. The butter is done when you have a ball of solid butter in some liquid, you can also stop a bit earlier for a whipped butter texture.

Thanks,
Monica
