Dear After School Families,

During November, we cozied up inside making slime that erupted with pockets of glitter. Although it took us some time to clean the glitter off of the floor and tables, we enjoyed one another’s companionship as we used slime remnants to peel away the mess. Slime days are some of our favorites, and there have been requests for Slime Time each Monday. Slime Time offers more chances to experiment with glow-in-the-dark slime, magnetic slime, and other types of slime textures that are satisfying and relaxing. When we need a change of pace, we can use our improved measuring skills to cook delicious food. Well-loved activities where more friends join in create spaces where we can spend more time with one another.

Although December is a short month because of winter break, we plan to enjoy all of the time we have together as the cold approaches. With new outdoor materials like igloo building tools and sleds, our snowy days will be fun despite the cold. I look forward to warming up inside afterwards with a story time led by Finn, who will read aloud in our cozy, quiet area. We have a large selection of books at After School, but we are always open to reading library books your child might bring to program. If you have any book recommendations with whimsical or enchanting illustrations, please email me at vhoff@wisconsinyouthcompany.org

Thank you from the After School Team at Thoreau – Victoria and Finn

Glitter Slime Recipe

Materials:

  • 6 gm glitter
  • ½ tbsp of baking soda
  • 6 fl oz clear glue
  • 1 ¼ tbsp contact lens solution
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 spoon

Instructions:

  1. Pour 6 fl oz of clear glue into a bowl
  2. Add ½ tbsp of baking soda to the bowl
  3. Add 6 gm glitter to the bowl
  4. Mix thoroughly with the spoon. Add more glitter if the contents of the bowl do not look as desired.
  5. Begin adding contact solution to the bowl 1 tsp at a time, mixing the solution in with a spoon until the slime begins to stick together.
