If you have a four-year-old heading into 4K, you may have heard the phrase “4K Wrap Childcare” and wondered what it means. 4K programs are most commonly offered as half-day schedules, which can leave parents piecing together care before or after. In simple terms, 4K Wrap is an extension of the 4K school day, helping children continue learning, playing, and building routines while giving families the coverage they need for work, school, and daily life. The best part? 4K Wrap, operated by Wisconsin Youth Company, takes place right in your child’s school building.
Wisconsin Youth Company has been offering 4K Wrap in Waukesha County since 1985. We’re excited to announce that this year we’re launching our first 4K Wrap program in the Madison Metropolitan School District at Franklin Elementary.
Here are 4 facts you may not know about 4K Wrap:
1. 4K Wrap is More Than “Extra Care”
4K Wrap is designed to support the whole child, not simply fill time before or after class. Quality programs build on the play-based learning children experience in 4K through art, movement, outdoor play, social interaction, and everyday routines that help children practice independence.
2. 4K Wrap Makes the Day Feel More Consistent
Transitions can be a big deal for four-year-olds. With programs taking place in school buildings, children will experience fewer disruptions in their day. Familiar adults, predictable routines, and a steady environment can help children feel more comfortable and ready to learn.
3. 4K Wrap Supports Working and Student Parents
Many 4K schedules do not cover a full workday or a full week. 4K Wrap helps families manage competing responsibilities by providing care around the instructional day. For parents and caregivers balancing jobs, classes, commutes, or appointments, that additional coverage can make 4K participation much more practical.
4. 4K Wrap Strengthens School Readiness
Our staff provide children opportunities to practice the skills they need for kindergarten: sharing materials, following routines, solving small problems, building language, managing emotions, and making friends. Those everyday moments may look simple, but they add up to confidence, resilience, and readiness.
